Looking Forward

Posted by Ben on January 2, 2010

I hope that everyone had a great New Year’s this past week.  I was lucky enough to be able to spend the night with a great group of friends, some of which I hadn’t seen in almost two years.  I think we ended up with almost twenty people there for the big night.  We had a lot of fun watching Tech’s victory in the Chick-fil-a bowl and then ringing in the new year after that.  We even set off some fireworks after midnight:

It was a great night overall, and I was glad to have the chance to reconnect with a couple of people.  We mostly just hung around the house the next morning and afternoon.  I ended up leaving around 3:30 and heading back to Raleigh.  I decided to follow the directions on the GPS this time rather than the ones from Google Maps and it took me back a much different way.  Instead of driving almost the entire trip on major interstates it took me south through Virginia along a bunch of different two lane highways.  The driving was definitely slower, but it was a beautiful afternoon for a drive through the countryside.  I also got to enjoy a gorgeous sunset over the fields and pull over a few times to take pictures, which definitely would have been harder to do on I-95.

This is the colors of sunset reflected off of the top of my car 🙂  I also got an amazing glimpse of the almost full moon rising on the horizon.  It’s always cool to see it that low in the sky because it looks so much larger and usually has a neat orange or red tint to it.  Unfortunately I couldn’t find a place to safely pull off the road to get a shot of it.

I know I’ve spent a lot of time, and a lot of words on this blog in reflection, looking back at the things I’ve done (and not done).  And while there’s nothing wrong with that, a new year seems like a great time to put the past behind me as best I can; keep the good memories and try to let go of the ones that weren’t so good.  With that in mind, I’ve spent some time over the last few days looking forward instead, to all of the opportunities that are still to come.

The next semester at school should be an interesting one.  I’ll be taking more classes, probably six, but hopefully none of them will be as time-consuming as Operating Systems was last year.  I’m really looking forward to the second semester of Real Analysis, even though I know it’ll be tough, and a course on Alexander the Great, taught by one of the professors who led the trip to Rome this past summer.  I also can’t wait to get back to salsa dancing in Blacksburg.  I’ve gone a couple of times here at home this break, but it’s just not the same as going out with a bunch of friends at school.  Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to do some more teaching this semester as well.

Now, in an ideal world, even with all of that on my plate, I’d still have plenty of time for relaxing, board games, and some more photography.  If not, I’ll just have to make time for them.  I’m still looking for that ideal balance between work and play, but I’m a lot closer to it now than I was two or three years ago, so that’s definitely a good thing.  I’m also going to try to make more time for hanging out with friends.  I feel like my workload last semester made me take a step in the wrong direction in this regard, and as I’ve said before I seemed to drift away from a few people that I had been close to before.  A rearranging of some priorities is in order to keep this from happening again.

So other than the possibility of a lot of work again, I’m very optimistic about the coming semester.  I can’t wait to be back at Tech, and I’m looking forward to catching up with all the friends I haven’t seen in a month.

  1. These are two of my favorite things for people to capture on film: Sunsets and fireworks. It’s like a late Christmas present!
