A Waterfall of Light

Posted by Ben on May 22, 2009

Thunder Over Louisville was an amazing experience.  An airshow that lasted all afternoon, culminating in one of “the largest fireworks displays in the history of the world.”  With a promise like that, expectations ran high.  And once the sun went down, they were not only met, but exceeded.  With two giant barges in the middle of the Ohio River, and a lot of fireworks tubes set up on the bridge between them the display was amazing.  Pictured above is one of the highlights near the end of the show.  From one end of the bridge to the other, first on the far side and then the near one, the crew set off what looks like a shower of sparks.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a shot of the sparks shooting from the near side of the bridge as my camera battery was in its death throes at the time.  I think you can still get a good idea of the effect from this shot though.  The light generated by this rain of sparks is enough to really illuminate the both the river and the large amounts of smoke released.  I think this would have looked really cool if I had been able to take a shot with a longer exposure, especially of the near-side version.  A tripod of some sort would have also helped, but I don’t think this picture ended up looking too shaky.
